About Sharkey

Angela Chapman - AKA “Sharkey” originally went to college for a metalsmithing degree but quickly realized that, although cool, metalsmithing was not a viable career path. Without much direction in her life, she ended up getting a job at a liquor store where she discovered a passion for wine and spirits. While there, she got her WSET level 3 certificate and started doing wine education as a side hustle. During this time she became more and more interested in winemaking itself and became determined to make it a career.

In 2014, Angela came to Lost Oak Winery in Burleson, TX. Her dream was to become a winemaker and work with Jim Evans who was the Lost Oak Winery Winemaker.

However, she was not put into production right away. She started out as the Wine Club Manager and over the years worked in various positions at Lost Oak including Operations Manager. In 2020 the tasting room was shut down due to Covid and there wasn’t much for Angela to manage. Lucky for her, an opportunity opened up in wine production and she was able to transition over to Assistant Winemaker under the tutelage of Jim Evans. She is now a winemaker and couldn’t be happier.

Beginnings

Angela's view of winemaking has been shaped greatly by her mentor Jim. They both see winemaking as a combination of science and art. Angela does tend to lean a little more heavily on the artistic side.

“I really want the grapes to be the best expression of themselves rather than force them into what they “should be” or “have been” in the past. If you want to insult my wine, tell me it’s consistent. I hate that. I want it to be consistently good, but not consistent. Every vintage should be an expression of that year; it should be a journey, an exploration, a new adventure for your taste buds, and everyone should be excited for the new version of their favorite varietal! In that way, it is art. Science comes in when something goes wrong, my job is more to keep it from going wrong in the fi rst place so that I can stay on the artistic side.”

Art Meets Science

Since Angela become Winemaker in 2020, Lost Oak has gained many awards from both national and international wine competitions, While the list is long, it includes the San Francisco International Wine Competition, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Lone Star International Wine Competition, Texas International Wine Competition, International Women's Wine Competition, Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo International Wine Competition to name a few.
